“DOROBUCHI”: UNVEILING “DoroBuAkpabio”
Many wondered why ranking senators from the South South, especially Senators James Manager and George Sekibo, who aspired to be Senate Minority Leader, dropped their aspirations to support the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate Minority Leader…hmmm!
Mr Agbonsuremi Augustine Okhiria, the AIT presenter who anchors “Inside the Parliament” on Tuesday 28 July 2015, suggestively quoted what is insinuated as ex Governor Godswill Akpabio’s politico-economic mantra: “what money cannot do, more money can do” to douse his search for explanation for the “America wonder” played out in the senate, which facilitated such novel somersault of the “senate ranking rule“.
However, I have chosen to see the hand of Turaki Atiku Abubakar delivering that parcelled “wonder”, possibly to prepare a solid pedestal for the political ascension of his proposed running mate in his bid to fly the presidential flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Presidential election. Otherwise, I have no option than to accept the Marvin Record’s label “signature tune” “DoroBuChi” as the reality of the existence of a political “DuroBuAkpabio”.
The lyrics of that song, amongst others, say “doro gather pass anybody for the gathering…doro get money pass everybody there…doro dribble pass anybody wey try to mark doro…doro is a cheerful giver…doro is a money spender. Anywhere wey doro dey, know say wahala dey…!
And interestingly, one of the public performance and in fact the most prestigious performance of that song by the entire Marvin Records team was inside the “Godswill Akpabio (bird’s nest) Stadium” in Uyo, on 7 November 2014 when the stadium was officially opened; graced by three African Presidents. This should definitely not be about Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, it is about how compromised our “ranking” senators are, should the outcome of the Senate Minority Leadership election be the case of an existing “DoroBuAkpabio”.
It should therefore not be a “wonder” to note that Senator Godswill Akpabio, apart from been the “wonder enshrouded” Senate Minority Leader, is also the first South South governor to break the historical jinx that made it impossible for any outgoing governor of South South States to automatically transform from occupying the Government House to sitting in the “red chamber” of the Nigerian Senate since 1999 when this Democratic dispensation commenced. This is the man, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio – a man of “history” and the nemesis for the nPDP nomads in the APC, who are planning to take over the PDP at their will.
Interestingly, we have a Senate President who is always ready to rule any senator that makes “sense” out of order. Does it mean that our “Senate President” abhors some senators’ resistance to accepting nonsense? Are Nigerians to expect a nonsense making Senate?
Why the hasty “confidence” repose on a yet to take off Saraki’s leadership, and why would Senator Dino Malaye, the founder and anchor of “Anti Corruption Network” accept to be “bodyguard” for an alleged financial crime offender – Mrs Toyin Saraki? She is alleged to have laundered away some wealth belonging to Kwara State. She is however “innocent until proven guilty”. Whether he and others with him had such privileges or not, what remains clear is that these acts are indications of the distractions confronting our senate, because of the calibre of people admitted.
I fear for how our lawmakers quickly have explanations for twisting the sensibilities and spirit of our laws. With Senator Ike Ekwerenmadu sitting as Deputy Senate President and leader of the PDP; and Senator Akpabio sits as the highest ranking member of the PDP Senate Caucus, the Deputy Leader of the PDP and a high ranking member of PDP NEC, Nigerians should be ready for a caustic senate.
The present opposition propaganda machine has Olisa Metuh, a loud public imager, Senator Akpabio, a circuitous entertainer with a huge war chest, and Senator Ekwerenmadu, the man gifted with political “tail wiggling” as leaders of the opposition’s nuclear setup, geared to secure the pulling of the rug of governance from under the feet of the All Progressive Congress. The development is for the sake of the PDP renaissance, a conscription aimed at providing adjutants for the nPDP in the senate to dictate what happens in the National Assembly.
Been impressed of the political sagacity of the 4th term serving Senator James Manager, representing Delta South Senatorial district, as confessed by erstwhile Governor Emmanuel Oduaghan, how he had to forego his senatorial ambition for James Manager’s, to avoid an inter-ethnic war in Delta State, I realised how politically rooted Senator Manager is in the politics of Delta State. It was also reported in the media how he wrested the management of a family related business with a relation. When he was mentioned in the Senate elections for Minority Officers, I saw a Senator Manager who will not give up his aspiration, and obvious privilege as the most qualified, without a fight.
I therefore find his concession to Senator Godswill Akpabio without a struggle as very unlikely in normal circumstance; and very surprising in the resultant circumstance. It really has to do with something Senator Akpabio did or said to his brother-senators to attain the same caliber of history attained by the disintegration of the USSR without a gunshot.
Surely, it has not been an easy climb for Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, who I see as a politician moving on the auto reverse gear in his political drive.
Starting off as a Lagos base lawyer, who was in touch with the Akwa Ibom community there, the association which brought hum to interface with Arc Victor Attah, his predecessor in office, who himself applied his architectural practice in Lagos. Akpabio has always been loud: after the 1999 transitional elections, Arc Attah became the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, and relatively Godswill Akpabio was one of the few indigenes who left Lagos with him for Uyo.
He started as the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Local Government Service Commission.
As time wound, he was elevated to the membership of the State Executive Council handling the Portfolios of Commissioner for Lands and Housing, and subsequently for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, before testing his political will in the contest for the seat of governor in 2007. His political advance since 1999 is a matter of focus now that he is in the senate and as the minority leader.
His aspiration of becoming a senator, as the one of his governorship bid, did not materialise easily. Starting with a deliberate fumble, in the presence of the then Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, during his Good Governance Tour of 2013, Godswill Akpabio confessed to singlehandedly ensuring Aloysius Etok became a senator by short changing the winner in the party primaries to reward Senator Etok.
Nobody knew then that Akpabio was sounding his bid to take over from Senator Etok in the Senate. After so much bickering between the two, with Senator Etok threatening to break the senate seat in contention, the struggle culminated in Senator Etok heading the senatorial campaign team of Godswill Akpabio. However, no one can tell how and what led Senator Etok to recede his struggle for a 3rd term service in the Senate. As a testament to Senator Akpabio’s “doro-rity”, I can guarantee that should it be that it was Senator Aloysius Etok that sits in the place of Senator Akpabio in the senate, he would not be the incumbent Minority Leader.
I can therefore comfortably assert that the recent leap of Senator Godswill Akpabio stands him in good stead to act as the “opposition leader” in the country. With a robust contact in the PDP Governors Forum, being the deputy leader of the PDP, it is likely that Akpabio targets the possibility of becoming the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP in the 2019 Presidential elections. It is this permutation that would make the present house of rebels stand against itself sooner or later.
Time will come when Turaki Atiku Abubakar will pair up with Godswill Akpabio, and Bukola Saraki with Ike Ekwerenmadu, on the platform of the PDP, then the present romance between the nPDP in APC and the PDP would be openly defined for all Nigerians to see. Surely no nPDP member will get APC Presidential flag to fly in 2019 – they all shot themselves on their legs.
This analysis is pursuant to the fact that the APC cannot remain the same again after the National Assembly leadership fiasco, the trust existing between the APC and the nPDP is drown, and President Buhari’s clear leaning towards the APC than the nPDP is indicative of which divide will vacate the APC collapsing building: a collapse waiting to happen.
In the mean time, as we enjoy the drama in the Senate, watching how stability will be attained. I dont care who takes which and what office, what he did or said, whether dorobuchi or dorobuakpabio, “na God win” for Nigerians: all we are saying…give us good laws. Less of self and more of Nigerians.
